Q: What is the minimum cover for PE pipe?

A: The overlay materials should be built up in compacted layers until the overlay material is to a level of a minimum of 150 mm above the top of the PE pipes. Large diameter (450 mm and above) PE pipes require the overlay materials to be carried to a cover of 300mm above the top of the PE pipes

Q: Can PE pipe be used above ground?

A: PE pipe provides unique joint integrity, toughness, flexibility, and low weight. These factors combine to make its use practical for many “above-ground” applications.

Q: What is the pressure rating of PE gas pipe?

A: Gas pipe is manufactured from PE 2708 (formerly PE 2406) with a cell classification of 234373E and hydrostatic design basis (HDB) of 1250 psi @ 73°F.

Q: How long can PE pipe be stored outside?

A: Examples: ASTM D2513-09a specifies that black PE pipe or black PE pipe with yellow stripes can be stored outdoors, unprotected from UV radiation, for up to 10 years and that yellow PE pipe can be stored outdoors for up to 3 years.

Q: How long does PE gas pipe last?

A: There are many factors that can influence the lifetime of PE pipe. Typically polyethylene pipe can last between 50-100 years if designed, maintained and installed correctly.

Q: What are the rules for PE gas pipes?

A: Natural gas pipelines of maximum operating pressure not exceeding 10 bar at temperatures from 0°C to 20°C are covered as are PE pipelines not exceeding 16 bar and temperatures from -25°C to 40°C for steel. For LPG the recommendations limit maximum operating pressure to 2 bar in the LPG vapour phase.
